The Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) Integrity Department remind all licensed participants of the requirements placed upon them by the Australian Harness Racing Rules (AHRR) to wear an approved helmet and protective vest at all times when driving or riding a horse.

This requirement includes training activities, whether conducted on a racecourse or a private training track and penalties may apply to participants found to be in breach of the relevant rules, which state:

159A.  (1)(a)  When driving or riding a horse the driver must wear a properly affixed helmet which is of a make and model approved by HRA and entered in the Register of Helmets.

159B. (1)(a)  When driving or riding a horse the driver must wear a properly affixed protective vest which is of a make and model approved by HRA.

223.  A person when engaged in any activity relating to the care, control, training or management of a horse shall wear adequate footwear, clothing and other protective bodily coverings.

All licensed participants are further reminded of Harness Racing Australia’s recommendation that helmets five years and older are retired.
